SICKO

Friday 8 February 2008

Saturday 9 February 2008

In his latest documentary, controversial director Moore turns his gaze to America's health care system, particularly the lives of ordinary people who are denied care by profit-driven insurance companies adept at finding loopholes.  Moore's usual mixture of confrontational stunts and sentiment is sometimes shocking, sometimes moving, and always entertaining.    (2007  USA  123 mins)   more

In Jerry Seinfeld's first big-screen project, new graduate bee, Barry B Benson, is disillusioned with the prospect of making honey for the rest of his life.  He decides to venture outside the hive, and things start to get complicated.  A slick and smart family animation, featuring plenty of Seinfeld's quirky humour.

An Egyptian police band arrives in Israel to perform a concert, but when they find themselves stranded overnight in the wrong town they have to accept the hospitality of the locals.  This enchanting comedy had a rapturous reception at Cannes and delivers a subtle but effective message about cross-cultural relations.

HAIRSPRAY

Thursday 14 February 2008

Back for a half term treat comes this film version of the Broadway musical, based on John Waters' cult 1980s comedy.  Loveable but "pleasantly plump" Tracy Turnblad (a wonderful performance from Nikki Blonsky) is determined to win a spot on a TV dance show.  Fabulous feel-good fun, with energetic dancing, catchy tunes, and great comedy performances.   (2007  USA  116 mins)   more

ST TRINIAN'S

Friday 15 February 2008

Saturday 16 February 2008
Saturday 16 February 2008

Based on the works of cartoonist Ronald Searle, this film is an updated version of a series of films made in the fifties.  But, could anyone reprise Alistair Sim in the role of Miss Fritton? You decide whether Rupert Everett can fill his shoes.  Updating the "jolly hockey sticks" appeal of the original movies, it still remains true to the risqué edginess of these earlier films.  (2007  UK  length tbc)   more

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

Saturday 16 February 2008

Sunday 17 February 2008

The five-time Grammy award winning animated music group is back after a long screen absence, this time in a CG/live action comedy for all the family.   Loveable chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore are transformed into pop sensations by songwriter Dave, but the out of control trio repay him by laying waste to his house, wreaking havoc with his career and generally turning his life upside down.

THE DARJEELING LIMITED

Sunday 17 February 2008
Monday 18 February 2008

Welcome to a further instalment of the weird and wonderful world of Wes Anderson, The Darjeeling Limited has all the eccentric hallmarks of his previous films.  Wilson, Brody and Schwartzman are three brothers who meet a year after their father's funeral ostensibly to bond with each other but also to visit their estranged mother.   Set on a train as it crosses India, Anderson gives us a tale that is colourful, wonderfully designed, funny and packed with intrigue.

Saturday 23 February 2008
Sunday 24 February 2008

Mr Magorium (Hoffman), now 243, wants to hand over his wonderful and magical toy shop to his assistant (Portman).  But can she find the confidence to step into the old man's shoes, and can she save the amazing shop from financial ruin when the accountant arrives? The shop itself is a visual and inventive delight where the toys (and the store itself) come to life, and Hoffman is a hoot from beginning to end.    (2007  USA  94 mins)   more

I’M NOT THERE

Monday 25 February 2008

Haynes' bold and unconventional biopic of legendary singer Bob Dylan stars six different actors in the lead role, each of them portraying different aspects of Dylan's life and work.  There are strokes of genius in both the direction and the performances.  Cate Blanchett is terrific, delivering a performance that's uncannily similar to the scruffy-haired 1960s Dylan we're most familiar with. Worth seeing for its sheer inventiveness, not to mention the terrific soundtrack.  (2007  USA / Germany  135 mins)   more

ATONEMENT

Friday 29 February 2008

This outstanding adaptation by Christopher Hampton and Joe Wright of Ian McEwan's novel is back!  A heart-breaking love story, an epic scene at Dunkirk (in itself worth the price of the ticket) and great performances from some of our most promising acting talent.    (2007  UK  123 mins)   more
